From the New Mexico Historical Review Vol.1,No.1.January 1926.Article by Francis T.Cheetham."The First Term Of The American Court In Taos,New Mexico."

"As to the Personnel of this Court,it will readily be seen that it was a Trader's and Trapper's Court.Don Carlos Beaubien, the presiding judge ,was a native of Canada of French Extraction, who came to New Mexico in 1823,and settled in Taos;and while what he did not know about the law would fill volumes."

He was the father of Narcisco Beaubin, one of those killed .Charles Hipolyte Trotier,Sieur de Beaubien, was the son of Paul Trotier,Sieur de Beaubien and Louise Adelaide Durocher,Born in Canada at Three Rivers.

Joab Houghton was a native of New York a Civil Engineer by Profession. He came to New Mexico in November of 1843 and located in Santa Fe.He was appointed Chief Justice by Gen.Kearney.

Antonio J.Otero from Valencia County born the 13th day of March 1809.He was the son of Vicente Otero and Gertrudes Chaves. He was appointed Associate Justice by Gen.Kearney.

Frank (Francis) P.Blair,Jr.,the United States Attorney was probably the only Lawyer present;both his Assistant and the Counsel for the defense were American Army Privates. He had just lately been admitted to practice in his native state. He was born in Lexington,Kentucky. He was the son of Frank Blair, the editor of the Washington Globe and the president's "Mouth-Piece"during Andrew Jackson"s Administration.

Ceran St.Vrain an American frontiersman of French descent, born in Missouri. He Was Captain and commander of the Volunteers and Charles Bent Business Partner. He was the Official Interpreter of the Court Proceedings.

Charles Bent's Brother George Bent was appointed Foreman of the Grand Jury.

Elliott Lee a member of the Grand Jury was the brother of Stephen Louis Lee,the late Sheriff of Taos County.

From the Book "Taos 1847-The Revolt in Contemporary Accounts."Edited by Michael McNierney."Of the two Judges who subsequently tried the rebels, one was a close friend of Charles Bent, and the other's son had met a particularly horrible death the night of Bent's murder. The jury, composed partly of friends and relatives of the slain men, repeatly announced,to no one's surprise, verdicts of guilty and sentence of death. In fifteen working days between the fifth and twenty-fourth of April, fifteen out of seventeen men were convicted of murder, one out of five for high treason and six out of seventeen for larcency. The executions for murder were carried out on an improvised gallows with borrowed lariats and tether ropes."
