ELLIOTT, ALEXANDER HUNTER (called Zan) was my gr-gr-uncle who left Missouri some years after the Civil War to drive cattle to Santa Fe. He either purchased land or homesteaded land near Trinchera where he lived for many years. We do not believe he ever married, although we heard that someone claimed to be a relative when Zan died in 1924. I believe he was involved in mining, cattle and gambling in Trinidad and probably died in Trinidad as he became almost blind. We believe he died about July 1924. I would appreciate any information, where he is buried, date of his death, details of property he once owned, etc. Thanks, Aileen Brewer in Arizona

Searching for any HAYCOOK/HAYCOCK/HACO*K/ or other variations in Colorado at any time. Especially trying to locate/identify "E.J.HAYCO*K" who lived at 1266 Hamlin Street, Denver with his son from about 1898. I have a letter from him to his father in OH dated 1 October 1902. He was originally from Columbus, OHIO. Also, his brother HOMER Q. HAYCO*K, might have lived in the Trinidad area (Hicks, Las Animas Co?) at about the same time. Homer was a Span-Amer War veteran. I don't know what happened to either of them after 1902. Anyone with any info on them, or any ideas/clues, please let me know. If you are tracking this family I have a large database from present back to about 1770 NJ. Still have lots of holes to fill. Will be glad to share what I have. Rich in New Hampshire.

Looking for any and all information about the life of my grandmother and her first husband. Walter Charles RAISH married Emma Grace ROPER on 18 June 1914 in Trinidad, Las Animas County, Colorado. The minister was Randolph COOK, Christian Church. Witnesses were Chas J. Klink and Orris O. CORRALL (Orris O. CARROLL) Orris' name is spelled both ways on the Certificate of Marriage. They had two children, Walter L. RAISH and Lucille RAISH. I have no information about Emma's family. Her death certificate indicates that she was born in Chicago, Illinois, but I am having difficulty with a birth certificate. I have reason to believe that she had a sister by the name of Effie who had a son whose name was Orris. I believe Orris Carroll, who was a witness at their wedding, may have been Effie's husband or a close relative. After Walter died Emma married his brother, Clair Kelsey RAISH, who is my grandfather. I would appreciate any information that you might be able to provide.

Looking for any information on the surname Serve'. I know that the family migrated from New Mexico but cannot link my family to any others. I have a baptism with my Ggrandmother's name listed as Maria Acencion Serve'(Cerve). Her parents are listed as Joseph Serve' and Maria Salazar. Maria Acencion Serve' baptism shows DOB July 19th, 1876 baptized at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish on July 25th 1876, Trinidad Colorado. Her sponsors are listed as Juan Andrea Sandoval and Maria Luisa Sandoval.
This is the tricky part......
In the 1880 census for Las Animas county Acencion Serve, 4 years old, is listed as living with her Grandparents Segundo and Tomasa Lopez. There is one other granddaughter listed, Betrabe Santistevan, 2 years old.
Where would have her parents been only 4 years after she was born?
I don't understand how Maria's Grandparents surname is listed as Lopez, but her parents surnames are Serve' and Salazar? Maybe someone could explain. If anyone has a clues please reply...

Submitter: Katharine Cotrell (kath@cotrell.net)
Date: 11 Jul 2000

Looking for information on John Cotrell and Edith Hill Cotrell. She was from North Carolina and he was from Tennessee. we think. Grandfather said his mom (Edith) was part Cherokee. Settled around Trinidad, CO in circa 1880. Had a son named Tom (my grandfather, born about 1884) who ran away from home at age 13, around 1897. May have had a son named Watson.

I did find mention of him in an old Montana cowboy's memoirs, but their encounter was after he left Trinidad. (From the Pecos to the Powder, as told by Bot Kennon to Ramon F. Adams, FYI.)

My grandfather was born in your county, in or near Trinidad, I think in 1888, or maybe it was 1884. I have some records upstairs that will tell me the right year.  I can't access them right now because I have a broken leg . He ran away to Texas and joined a cattle drive when he was 13. He never saw his family again. He was very closed-mouthed about his history. I'd love to find that side of the family. He spelled his surname COTRELL. That is a fairly unusual variant, so I'm not too sure his family spelled their name that way. In 2001 I visited Trinidad and searched records, and found several variants of the name on land titles.

I'm searching for information on the "Haurin" Family. They lived in Trinidad, Las Animas county from the 1880s thru 1947 and maybe longer. All family information was lost when Maria "Wentzal" Haurin died in 1947. Son Frank sold the family home with all the family history stored within. He was the last survivor in Trinidad and he died a short time later I believe.

August Haurin and Frank Haurin were employed in the Schneider Brewery as Brew Masters. Two other son's Emil and August Jr. left home to seek their fortunes elsewhere. August Jr. moved to Los Angeles and died there in 1971. He left one daughter who still lives there.

Any information about this family would be deeply appreciated. We don't know where August Haurin Senior or his wife Maria Wentzel came from or when August Sr. died. Don't know where either are buried. Thanks for any help!

According to the 1910 Census, my great grandparents were living in Cokedale, Las Animas County, Colorado. They were living on Lacaivanna Avenue. My great grandfather was a coal miner. Their names were Rafael Sena and Eva Sena. Their children were Estella Sena (age 4) born in Premiro, Colorado; Macloria Sena (age 2) unknown place of birth, and Veronis Sena (age 1 1/2) born in Segundo, Colorado. They had two more children, Andres Sena (born 12/1910 - my grandfather) born in Cokedale and Aguinaldo (born abt. 1914) - in Cokedale? Andres was baptized at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Trinidad on November 19, 1911. A cousin by the name of Vivianita (age 12) was living with them. I believe Macloria died in childhood. I don't know at what age she died or from what and I don't know where she is buried. Rafael and Eva were from New Mexico. I am also interested in any information for the following:

During this same time period I believe Eva's father, sister, and two brothers were also living in Cokedale. Father's name was Abran Martinez (age 47), sons Manuel C. Martinez (age 21) and Jose A. Martinez (age 18) and daughter Maria (age 23). Father and sons were coal miners. According to 1910 Census they were living on Lacaivanna Avenue. All were from New Mexico.
I also believe Rafael's father, Francisco Sena (age 54), 6th wife, Pastona (age 24), son Bernardino (age 8) and daughter Romanlita (age 4) were living on Potomac Street in Cokedale. Francisco was also a coal miner. Bernardino may have also died in childhood. Rafael and Pastona were from New Mexico.
I am interested in any additional information on the above and if possible, which mine(s) they worked at. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Colorado railroad history from early this century? What was the name of the RR co. and its successors? Would they have old personnel records? My grandfather died in 1918 in his 30s, either of TB or the flu epidemic of that year. His wife, my grandmother, was Mabel SMITH. My mother Sydna ADAMS was born May 18, 1910. Does anyone know about the railway history or the Adams family? They were immigrants from Canada.

I am looking for information on Thomas Alderson who married my ggrandmother, Ellen Sherratt, in 1888. He was killed in the El Moro Mine in 1891. The El Moro Mine, owned by the Colorado Coal & Iron Company. Does anyone have any information on where the mine is/was located and who might have the records? Or, how do I get a death certificate from that time period? I would also like to locate his burial place.

According to a newspaper article in New Mexico, my great grandparents we married in Aguilar, CO in 1915.
Rachel Martha Ellen Morelock married George W. Bailey.
Before I go to the expense of purchasing a marriage certificate, I was hoping someone in that area might know more about the couple or could look up the record to verify it is there. I'm trying to verify the groom's information. Thanks for your help.

I am looking for a marriage certificate(s) for : Ana (Anna, Annie) Elsbeth (Elizabeth) Sensenbach born Switzerland abt. 1865. I obtained a marriage license for Ana and a John Flury (Flurry, Fleury) while visiting Trinidad a few years ago but have misplaced it. I found it downstairs with the older marriage licenses. I think the date was somewhere between 1880 and 1882. I need a replacement copy.
Also, Ana may have taken out a second Marriage License to a William R. Allen somewhere between 1882 and 1885, also in Trinidad. I did find a marriage license for a William Allen to a Cary(Cory) ______dated very close to the one Ana took out with John Flurry. Wm Allen was my greatgrandfather and Ana Sensenbach was my great grandmother. Please help.

My great-grandfather, James Monroe Williams (1833-1907), was a cavalry officer who resigned from the army in 1873 as a result of incapacitation from wounds during fights with Indians in Arizona, and during the Civil War.  He had been a brevet brigadier general in the Civil War, and a brevet major in the 8th Cavalry during the Indian Wars in the Southwest. In 1873, he settled in Trinidad, where he resided until sometime in the 1880's (I think).  He left Colorado for Kansas, and ultimately Washington, D.C.  I have attached two photos of him from Civil War days.

At the time he moved to Trinidad, he was married and had one child.  His wife's name was Mary Elizabeth (Brawner) Williams.  Their children were John Absalom Williams (born 1870) and James Williams (born 1872) born at Fort Selden, New Mexico. They subsequently had two more children in Trinidad:  George Williams (1875), and Robert L. Williams (1879).

Robert L. Williams was my grandfather.  He and my grandmother Hattie Harrower Williams are buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad.

I'm interested in obtaining any possible information about James M. Williams during his tenure in Trinidad.  I know that he operated a general store, and raised cattle. I have a photo of his house (attached).

Also of great significance is any information as to what happened to my grandfather's brothers.  I'm not certain, but believe James Williams lived in Denver as an elderly man.  We lived in Denver when I was in high school, and there was some mention of him.  My grandfather never mentioned his brothers George and John.  I don't know if they survived to adulthood.  They are in the 1880 census.

My parents died many years ago, and there is no surviving information from them.  Family legend has it that one of my grandfather's siblings was killed in a gunfight over a poker game in Trinidad, but I don't have any clue as to the veracity of that claim...but it's fun...sort of like having a horse thief in the family. Anyway, that's a lengthy description of the context of my search for information. Thank you for your help.

My great-aunt (Jeanne CLOW) was born in Trinidad around 1907. She is mentioned in her mother's obituary in 1934 as Mrs. Clarence ABLE, living in Trinidad. Family lore says that she married a 'Guy' Able. The puzzle is in the marriage records. There is a record of a Jean Clow marrying a J.A. Atkinson in Trinidad on 10-10-1928. The witnesses on the marriage license are Mr and Mrs M. J. Clow (Her brother, my grandfather, is Milton John Clow, and he was married in 1926). So the puzzle is: What happened to J.A. Atkinson? Where and when did Jeanne and Clarence Able get married? [ It's not in Las Animas, nor in any other online record in Colorado or New Mexico ]

A photo of Clay Allison with an injured leg shows in imprint of "Gittings copy," indicating a print pulled from the original tintype. If City and/or County Directories are available for Trinidad and Las Animas county, could someone please check to see if there was a GITTINGS PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO in the area ca. 1867-1868?

I am looking for any info about William Alfred Garner. My understanding is that he settled there after the war, and was very prolific. William was a pretty colorful character according to what I have been told, but I can't find anything about him after he was discharged from the Union Army as Capt.

Searching for any information on the Brady family. Zephaniah, his wife Louisa and their sons William and Virgil were residents of Trinidad in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Zeph died in 1899, but Louisa remained a resident into the 1900's. She may have died there. She lived at 112 N. Ash Street when the 1900 census was taken, and was still living there in 1903. Not sure how long she stayed after that.
Would love any info!

I am trying to find a birth or baptismal record for Ida Agusta ZIMMERMAN, who is supposed to have been born in Trinidad, Las Animas County, on 11 Aug 1876. May have been baptized in Methodist church in area. I am most interested in determining her parents. Ida Augusta Zimmerman is on the 1880 census back in Minnesota, listed as stepsister living with brothers William, Otto & August.  Could not have been in CO very long, as Zimmermans were still in MN in 1875 state census.  Am completely baffled as to Colorado connection, especially since father John Frederick Zimmerman would have been almost 70 yrs old in 1876!  So the stepsister term may be incorrect the Zimmermans were strong Methodists, so church records may be the salvation. Any help is appreciated to help clear up the confusion. Thank you for any help you may be able to offer!
