Mary Emma Kincaid, a teacher, was 26 years old when she died from a spinal congestion of the brain on February 12, 1882. Mrs. Kincaid was born and married in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and came west with her husband. They lived in Wichita, Kansas, and Pueblo before moving on to Arizona where he died. The young widow and a child returned to Pueblo. The youngster died of tuberculosis shortly thereafter. She opened a school in East Pueblo in March 1879, taught one summer in La Veta, and was principal of the high school department of the South Pueblo school when she was stricken fatally. Her obituary in The Pueblo Chieftain concluded “Every little soul on the Mesa believes he or she has lost the best friend they ever had on earth and the best teacher, and this writer thinks so too.”
