Rooney Family
The S.J. Rooney family lived for half a century on a dairy farm six miles north of Pueblo on the east side of the Fountain River. The father was born in Wisconsin and was wounded in the Battle of Bull Run while a member of the 14th Wisconsin Infantry. He never did apply for a pension stating that others needed it worse than he. Rooney was secretary of District 11 school board for many years. He was born June 25, 1841, and died August 25, 1927. A son, William H., born February 13, 1871, drowned August 11, 1889 in a flooded arroyo while returning home in the early morning darkness from delivering milk in the city. Another son, Maurice W., died October 11, 1906 at the age of 30. Katie, born in 1869 in Pennsylvania died in 1882. The mother, Johanna Coughlan Rooney, born in 1843, died in 1926.
