S.J. and M.A. Patterson Samuel J. Patterson, a contractor and rancher, was born in 1822 and came to Pueblo in 1869. He was a charter member of Masonic Lodge No. 17. He built the road through Abeyta Pass into the San Luis Valley in 1878. He served as street superintendent in Pueblo. His crew built a new reservoir for the waterworks in 1881. At one time he was proprietor of the Overland Corral. He died November 23, 1894, at his home at 825 West Fourteenth Street. His wife, whose name often appeared in print as Mrs. M.A. Patterson, was one of several valiant pioneeer women who gave of their time to relieve the suffering of fellow human beings and to raise the moral standard of the city. She was a charter member of the Ladies Benevolent Union of Pueblo, and was president of the Pueblo district of Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She died September 11, 1897 at the age of 54. Two grown sons survived the parents.
