Rifle Reveille 10-3-1902 Our Candidates - Whitney Newton of Pueblo, the Republican nominee for state treasurer, was born in Monroe, Wisconsin, in 1858. He came to Colorado with his parents in 1871. Attended the public schools in Denver and was practically the first one to be graduated from the East Denver High school, although the first formal graduation exercises were held for the class of the year following. Mr. Newton was graduated from Cornell University in 1879 with high standing and class honors. He was employed in the City National bank, Denver, and the Bank of Breckenridge for a year and a half following graduation, but gave up the employment to engage in the lumber trade. He became a member of the firm of Newton Lumber Company, and went to Pueblo in 1881. Mr. Newton is also connected with the Sayre-Newton Lumber Company in Denver and the Pagosa Lumber Company of Archuleta county. Through these and other enterprises he is constantly contributing to the development of the resources of the state. Mr. Newton has spent practically his whole life in Colorado. He has given his attention entirely to business. He has never been a candidate for any office.
