CHARLES HENKEL
Contributed by Karen Mitchell.
Mr. Charles Henkel is a native of Germany, and was born in 1846, and with his parents came to the United States when a trifle less than four years of age, settling first in Mississippi, soon after removing to Iowa. At the age of 14, Mr. Henkel, being attracted by the Pike's peak gold excitement, came to Colorado and began mining in California gulch. In 1861 he joined the First Colorado cavalry and served till the close of the civil war. He began business in a small way at Pueblo in 1869, gradually increasing his trade until today we find him the senior member of the great wholesale grocery firm of C. Henkel & Co. Mr. Henkel is a man of fine native ability and a first-class business man. Rocky Mountain News 5-16-1884 - Prominent Men of Pueblo
