Yaklich, Dennis Dennis Yaklich – Colorado Springs Gazette – May 13, 2006 – Panel: No Proof '77 Death Homicide – Investigation: Initial Inquiry Into Death of Pueblo Detective's Wife Faulty – The 1977 death of a Pueblo police detective's wife was suspicious, and the investigation into it was handled poorly, a panel of investigators found, but it has no proof the death was homicide. Pueblo County Sheriff Dan Corsentino on Friday announced the findings of a special task force he formed to look into the death of Barbara Yaklich. She was the first wife of detective Dennis Yaklich. Dennis Yaklich was killed in 1985 by two teenagers hired by his second wife, Donna Yaklich. Donna Yaklich, whose case brought national headlines and inspired a 1994 made-for-TV movie, claimed her husband had abused her. She also told a psychologist hired by her attorney that Dennis implied he'd had a part in Barbara's death and could kill her, too, and make it look like an accident. Barbara Yaklich's death was ruled an accident when the coroner determined she fainted from taking diet pills and her husband inadvertently caused liver damage while trying to resuscitate her. The case was reopened last year when a Denver television station asked two forensic pathologists to review the findings, and they concluded the damage could have been done by a punch to the stomach. The team of investigators appointed by Corsentino determined the death was suspicious but not conclusively a homicide. They were hampered by the fact that Pueblo police did not do a complete investigation. There was no indication that witnesses were interviewed. "This case needed some good, basic and old-fashioned police work," said the head of the team, Steve Johnson, of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The team noted they found no evidence of collusion or a cover-up by police at the time. Lacking more information from 1977, the investigators were forced to leave the case how they received it: open. "The team leaves the case open for anyone that can provide additional information that may lead them to finally bringing this case to a close," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Donna Yaklich was released from prison to a halfway house last fall after serving 18 years of a 40-year prison sentence. Colorado Springs Gazette – August 1, 1993 – Yaklich Back in Pueblo Court Asking for Shorter Sentence – Pueblo – Donna Yaklich, who has admitted hiring two men to kill her police officer husband, made a final appeal for a shorter prison term Friday before a District Court judge. Pueblo Police Cpl. Dennis Yaklich, 38, was shot to death in an ambush by Charles and Eddie Greenwell in the driveway of his home on Dec. 12, 1985. The officer was returning to his Avondale home from work. Donna Yaklich's attorneys, Stanley Marks and Richard Hostetler, sought to have her 40-year sentence reduced. The late Judge Jack Seavy sentenced her to 40 years in prison on July 30, 1988, for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Initially, she was charged with first-degree murder. Charles Greenwell, who was 16 at the time of the crime, received a 20-year prison sentence; Eddie Greenwell, then 25, received 30 years. Donna Yaklich, 38, broke down several times Friday and read a prepared statement emphasizing how she knows she was wrong to hire the Greenwells in a pay-for-murder scheme with $45,000 in insurance money as their reward. She told the court there were no excuses for what she had done, but there were reasons. She described a seven-year marriage of physical and mental abuse. Yaklich said prison life at the Women's Correctional Facility near Canon City is numbing her. "That's what scares me about doing time, being cold and not fit for society," she said. Young, Sadie Sadie Young – Walsenburg World – September 9, 1938 – Lad Sees Mother Electrocuted by Faulty Washing Machine Cord – Before the horrified eyes of her seven-year-old son, Mrs. Sadie Young, 42, was electrocuted accidentally in the backyard of her home late Thursday afternoon, when a defective washing machine connection sent a current of electricity thru her body. The son, Joe Young, saw his mother fall dead at his feet after she had placed her hand on the fender of a truck parked in the yard. When the lad's screams to his mother to "get up" failed to rouse her, he ran to the home of a neighbor for help. All efforts to revive her failed, however. The fatal shock was transmitted to the mother's body, investigating officers said, by a defective extension cord reaching from the kitchen of the Young home to the washing machine. Worn insulation where the cord lay across the hood of the parked truck charged the entire vehicle, the officers said, and the current passed entirely across Mrs. Young's body as she stood on damp earth and placed her hand accidentally against the fender of the machine. The Young home is on West Seventh Street. Huerfano County Coroner H. J. Furphy said no inquest into the death would be held, determining the tragedy clearly an accident. Youngblood, formerly of this place, now of Knoxville, has just received a telegram from City Attorney Harry A. Lindsley, of Denver, Colorado, to whom credit largely belongs for the conviction of the three young bandits, Fred Arnold, Newton Andrews and Charlie Peters, for the murder of Mrs. Amanda Youngblood, on New Year's Eve of 1903, advising him that the supreme court had sustained the lower court and that the murder of his dear old wife would be avenged. Unless the governor of Colorado interferes, and it is not believed that he will, the three young bandits will be executed during the week commencing May 21, 1905. The details of the murder of Mrs. Youngblood, which was one of the most cold-blooded and cruel ever committed, was published in The Telephone at the time, and are familiar to our readers. Robert Youngblood, a son of Mrs. Youngblood, was seriously wounded by the bandits, but has recovered, and is now living in Knoxville. The Outlook - White Oaks, NM - May 25, 1905 – Murders Must Die Board of Pardons so Decides: Two of the Murderers of Mrs. Youngblood to be Hanged at an Early Date, One Reprieved for Six Months. Denver, Colorado, May 18. After the hearing yesterday in the governor's office, the state board of pardons announced its decision in the case of the three Youngblood murderers who sought a commutating of sentence from hanging to life imprisonment. The verdict was that Frederick Arnold and Newton Andrews must be hanged on the week beginning Sunday, May 21st. Charles O Peters whose sanity has been questioned was granted a six month's reprieve and will be hanged the week beginning November 19th. All phases of the case were carefully considered by the board of pardons. A report submitted by the sanity commission signed by three of the doctors, stated that all three of the murderers are sane. An additional report signed by Dr. J. E. Courtney with regard to the mental condition of Charles O. Peters indicated uncertainty and this undoubtedly led to his reprieve. It was a sad gathering in the governor's office. The members of the board of pardons were intent upon carrying out the law and their final decision does so to the letter. The tears of mothers and relatives present were of no avail and neither were the please of attorneys for the youths. Willis Elliott made a strong plea for clemency for the men. He does not believe in capital punishment and made a sincere and eloquent talk against it. Col J. M. Essington, Arnold's attorney, also spoke asking clemency. Dr. Pierce S Smith made a general argument against capital punishment. Governor McDonald probably will approve the report of the board as he has stated he would be guided by its recommendation. The following is the report of the sanity commission: May 12 1905, "We have this day examined as to the mental condition of Charles O Peters. No 5974 Frederick Arnold and Newton Andrews, now confined in the state penitentiary under sentence for death. In our opinion each of the said convicts is sane Respectfully, Howeel T. Pershing MD, S.D. Hopkins, MD, F. N. Carrier MD. Dr. Courtney's report states that while there war many indications that Peters is feigning insanity some of his symptoms are those of dementia leaving a reasonable doubt as to his sanity. Willis Elliott stated last night that if sufficient money can be raised for the purpose the case of the Youngblood murderers will be taken on appeal to the Untied States Supreme Court, providing Governor McDonald will grant a stay of execution. It is estimated that it would between $500 and $600 to appeal the case. An appeal would be taken on behalf of some one member of the trio which would have the effect of staying execution in all three if the high court accepted the case.
