Denny, Mr.
Denver Evening Post 1-27-1899 – Complaint About Asylum – Attorney General Campbell has received a letter from John L. Sherrod of Fruita, Colo., which is expected to raise the question of whether the insane asylum investigation shall not be reopened. The writer states that he was in the asylum for two months during 1895, and that an attendant named Denny at that institution abused inmates terribly. In one instance, says Sherrod, Denny beat and kicked a man brutally and the next day the patient was dead. Another example of the same kind is related by Sherrod in which an old man was kicked in the groin and died in a short time afterward. The writer of the letter was sent to the asylum on account of the excessive use of whisky and narcotics.

Later she and her sister, Mary, owned and operated Dolgan Cleaners, the first female-owned laundry in Colorado. She was our "Bookie" for football and baseball games, especially the playoffs. Jane loved her beer, cheetos and chocolate. She was especially fond of greasy fried chicken, chicken nuggets, having toast and coffee with friends, sharing past memories with others, watching Sylvia Browne on television, sitting on the porch swing to watch traffic pass by on Santa Fe and listening to big band music. She was a kind, gentle and generous soul and we are saddened by her passing, but heartened by our memories of her. She was our "Armchair General" and it has been an honor to serve her. She took care of all of us and we feel privileged to have assisted her in any way we could. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004. Denver Evening Post 1-24-1899 – Asylum Inquisitors Down to Hard Pan – Pueblo, Jan. 24 – What will probably be the last day of the insane asylum investigation by the legislative committee began this morning with a denunciation by Attorney (Mortimer F.) Taylor, who, in vigorous language, characterized the examination of witnesses as “bullyragging,” and of such an illegal nature that 90 per cent of the testimony taken would be thrown out of an ordinary justice court… The Examination of Witnesses Finally Resumed – The proposition of Mr. Taylor and Mr. (J. R.) Dixon was rejected and to save time for it was now 11:10 o'clock, the attorney general called J. I. Thomas and J. F. Driver, attendants in the male wards. Their testimony before the committee of the board of charities and corrections was read to them and the cross-examination was in the line of showing the infrequency of vacations, their yearning for relaxation and the faithfulness of Dr. Thombs to his duties at the asylum.
