Rocky Mountain News 2-7-1897 – The Insane Asylum – Dr. Eskridge Replies to Strictures Made Upon the Management of the Institution – To the Rocky Mountain News: The editorial on the insane asylum and the interview with the county commissioners in to-day's News, are in no sense malicious, and I feel that you want to get at the truth in the matter. The management of the asylum, and especially Dr. Thombs, the superintendent, have been misrepresented by somebody who seems to have a personal spite against Dr. Thombs… A staff of attending physicians has been elected to the asylum and these serve without pay. They consist of Drs. R. W. Corwin, Hubert Work, A. T. King, the present mayor of Pueblo, Rillah G. Hay, wife of Rev. Hay, E. M. Marbourg and W. W. Bulette of Pueblo, Drs. E. J. A. Rogers and Clayton Parkhill have accepted the position of consulting surgeons, and go down without pay whenever summoned…

Pueblo Indicator 8-16-1941 - State Hospital Feeds 5,000 - Institutions can buy all kinds of kitchen equipment built to order, but it can't get cooks that way. Consequently the Colorado State hospital is starting its second class of apprentice cooks and plans to make it a regular feature, with two classes a year. The hospital feeds 5,000 persons three times a day from nine kitchens. Cooks accustomed to smaller kitchens are lost in mass meal production. The apprentice cooks all receive six months' training and experience before becoming full-fledged cooks. In the new class are Mrs. Mildred Peterson, Mrs. Irene Harris, Miss Lata Schroyer, Mrs. Helen Cermak, Miss Bessie Bellitti, Mrs. Jane Queen, Mrs. Genova Chandler and Mrs. Arlene Fjelstad.

Pickett, Margaret Catherine
Margaret Catherine (Paveglio) Pickett - Pueblo Chieftain - September 27, 2005 - Margaret Catherine (Paveglio) Pickett, affectionately known as "Rete" to close family members, passed away peacefully at the Sangre de Cristo Hospice on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, with her family at her side. Born Sept. 29, 1917, in Albia, Iowa, to Italian immigrant parents, Blanche Rose and Donato Paveglio. Predeceased by brother, Pete Pavell; sister-in-law, Kay Pavell; brother, Donald Paveglio; and her son-in-law, John Salimeno Jr. Survived by her husband, Frank Pickett, Pueblo, Colo.; daughters, Bev DeLeon and Kathy Salimeno of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Tisha (Albert) Graziano, Des Moines, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Katie Paveglio, Chicago, Ill. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to mention. Margaret touched many lives and to know her was to love her. She was a "quiet hero." She was a member of St. Francis Parish where she sang in the church choir preceding her lengthy illness and was a retiree from the Colorado State Hospital. She was a true believer in keeping things simple and not sweating the small stuff, until it came to her family where the sky was the limit. Being home with her family was her joy, and the simple things in life were her passion. A new nest of birds in the back yard, rescuing a family of abandoned baby squirrels, feeding a stray cat or dog, walking in the rain, the pride in hanging out the whitest wash on the block, playing with the family pets (which she loved like her children), her family around the table, the Denver Broncos (especially her "boy" John Elway), caring for her beautiful yard and prize roses; these are the things she lived for. She will be remembered fondly for her infectious smile and love of a good joke, her modest and unassuming nature, her love and devotion to her family and her melt-in-your-mouth meatballs and spaghetti sauce like no other. We rejoice with you Mother that you are finally at home with God. You were truly one of God's "Angels on Earth." We were so fortunate to have you with us for so long; time to build a million beautiful memories. We know and understand now that you actually gave us two lives, our own life and yours. You taught us well how to survive without you for a little while, but you didn't prepare us for the hole that has been left in our hearts. We look forward to seeing you soon. Your loving husband and daughters. At her request, cremation is taking place and there will be no formal church proceedings. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to be made in her memory to the Sangre de Cristo Hospice, 1716 Reading Ave., Pueblo, CO, 81005. Masses may be requested privately at the parish of your choice.

Prestel, Erna
Erna Prestel - Pueblo Chieftain - August 06, 2003 - Erna Prestel, 84, departed from her life here Aug. 2, 2003, after a brief illness (encephalitis). Preceded in death by her husband, Erwin Prestel in 1991; her mother, Frieda Augustine in 1987; and sister, Elizabeth in 1946 at age 23. Erna will be remembered and missed by her sisters, Lucia Hipp and Walery Rehar; two nephews and numerous nieces; her great-niece and her children, David and Ashley Connors, whom she adored. Her grieving pets that are left behind. Erna will be remembered by her neighbors, friends and all who got to know her for her wit, humor, generosity and compliments. Erma wanted people to feel good. She was a self-styled Zsa Zsa Gabor. She patronized restaurants and stores almost on a daily basis. Stores made her light up like a Christmas tree. After her retirement from the Colorado State Hospital in the 1970s, Erna dedicated her life to animals and birds. She had a deep compassion for suffering, homeless and lonely and neglected animals. She provided them with food and fresh water daily and vet care. She heard their cry and responded under any weather conditions, day or late night and greeted them with a loving word. Her main concern was, “Who will care for them when I am gone?” Donations may be made in memory of Erna to Pueblo Animal Shelter, through the funeral home. Honoring her wishes, there will be no viewing and no service. Family may be contacted through the funeral home.
