Wasson, Tessie
Denver Evening Post 1-24-1899 – Asylum Inquisitors Down to Hard Pan – Pueblo, Jan. 24 – What will probably be the last day of the insane asylum investigation by the legislative committee began this morning with a denunciation by Attorney (Mortimer F.) Taylor, who, in vigorous language, characterized the examination of witnesses as “bullyragging,” and of such an illegal nature that 90 per cent of the testimony taken would be thrown out of an ordinary justice court… Miss Tessie Wasson was called. She was sharply cross-examined by Attorney Taylor, who drew out the fact that she came to Pueblo through the instrumentality of Mrs. Fisher, and kept notes of the visits of Dr. and Mrs. Thombs, to her ward. “I did this,” she explained, “as a matter of interest to my people in the East.” These notes Miss Wasson used at the previous investigation. She had used restraint on some of her patients. It was true she had not reported the matter to the superintendent, but she had been taught to apply the wristlets, muffs or jacket as soon as she thought necessary.

Weinhausen, Ernest
Denver Evening Post 1-21-1899 – Madmen Pass in Review at Pueblo – Pueblo, Colo., Jan. 21 – When the asylum investigating committee met this morning… Slipshod Methods of Keeping Records – Ernest Weinhousen, the druggist at the asylum, was recalled to the stand and asked if he had any method of giving to the commissioners an accurate account of the expenditures in his department since he had been employed at the asylum. The witness said, “No, but the steward had.” He was asked as to a record of births and deaths and asked to look up an entry of one Henry C. Brooks. He did so, but it was only after several minutes' delay. He had no index of patients, but stated that the record books were complete to date. Books “A” and “B,” kept by Dr. Thombs himself were offered in evidence. The witness testified that when he became connected with the asylum he found the books very faulty. Dr. Thombs told him to verify the books and rewrite them. “Why did you swear a moment ago that these books contained a complete record of births and deaths, discharges, entrances or anything else since the asylum started?” “I do not know how to answer that question,” replied the witness. The stenographer was appealed to. The testimony showed that at the session last night Weinhousen had sworn that the asylum had a complete record not only of the entrances of patients, but their occupation, nativity and the character of their complaint. Senator Felton stated that the whole matter had better be withdrawn. Attorney General Accused of Being Too Severe – Senator Felton addressed the committee, stating that he made the unhappy remark merely from a desire to save time. He could see no inconsistency in the testimony of the witness. It appeared to him that the attorney general was endeavoring to make the witness say what he did not mean. The witness had testified previously that he had a complete record of the commitments, he had said nothing about whether it was a complete record now or one that had been… Representative Bell conducted a searching examination of Weinhousen, drawing out the fact that he had never taken an inventory of the stock of drugs, never gave a receipt for them, taken the physical measurements of new patients, or any means of identification, beyond the commitment papers. The cross-examination was conducted by Attorney (Mortimer F.) Taylor for Dr. Thombs. Witness said that J. W. Masters had preceded him as druggist. Masters was discharged from the institution because he did not keep the records in books “A” and “B” correctly. The work of witness in the new books was begun within two or three days after he came to the asylum. The commitments were easy of access and could be shown to the committee whenever they desired to see them. Book “C” was produced and the witness demonstrated the new system of recording patients. Witness did not think it was necessary to photograph or measure patients as an insane asylum is not a penitentiary…

Weinhausen, Ernest
Denver Evening Post 1-23-1899 – Probing Asylum Affairs – Tilts Between Investigators Enliven the Proceedings – Pueblo, Jan. 23 – … C. H. Wells, secretary of the state board of pharmacy, was placed on the stand. “Do you know Ernest Weinhousen?” “Yes, sir.” “Is he a registered pharmacist of this state?” “No.” It will be recollected that Weinhousen on the stand testified that he was a registered pharmacist. Attorney Dixon, for the defense, took the witness. “Did you not tell Mr. Weinhousen that he need not be registered while engaged at the asylum, in a conversation had with him some time ago?” Witness replied that he did have such a conversation and that he told him that it was the proper thing to get registered. The pharmacy law does not cover the drug store at the asylum but he did not think Weinhousen would be here all the time. He knew Weinhousen had been connected with two reputable drug stores in Pueblo.

Weinhausen, Ernest
Denver Evening Post 1-25-1899 – Summed Up By Word “Nothing” – Insane Asylum Investigation Devoid of Results – Pueblo, Jan. 25 – After five days' investigation by the joint legislative investigating committee into the affairs of the state insane asylum, the state rested its case last night with the announcement of defeat… Ernest Weinhousen was called. “Were you ever registered as a pharmacist?” asked Attorney Taylor. “Yes; in South Dakota, nine years ago,” was the answer. “Why didn't you testify to that the other day?” asked the attorney general. “You did not ask me to. You asked me if I was a registered pharmacist, and I said, 'Yes.' ”

Weinhausen, Ernest
Denver Evening Post 2-17-1899 – Defense of Thombs – His Senatorial Allies Are Not Niggardly With Time – … Mr. Wheeler also said that he had requested C. L. Stonaker to furnish reports and data… “The records show that for 150 days this druggist, Winderhauser, or whatever his name is, issued on the average less than one prescription a day for more than 150 days. Four hundred and forty-four patients, and only one prescription per day? Does that show that you and I and all the rest of the state are at fault in not appropriating the necessary funds?”

Rocky Mountain News 2-7-1897 – The Insane Asylum – Dr. Eskridge Replies to Strictures Made Upon the Management of the Institution – To the Rocky Mountain News: The editorial on the insane asylum and the interview with the county commissioners in to-day's News, are in no sense malicious, and I feel that you want to get at the truth in the matter. The management of the asylum, and especially Dr. Thombs, the superintendent, have been misrepresented by somebody who seems to have a personal spite against Dr. Thombs… A staff of attending physicians has been elected to the asylum and these serve without pay. They consist of Drs. R. W. Corwin, Hubert Work, A. T. King, the present mayor of Pueblo, Rillah G. Hay, wife of Rev. Hay, E. M. Marbourg and W. W. Bulette of Pueblo, Drs. E. J. A.
